The ScreenWriters Association

The Screenwriters Association (SWA), (formerly, the Film Writer’s Association) is inviting applications for the appointment of a full-time lawyer to be based at its office in Mumbai.

About SWA

SWA is a registered Trade Union of Screenwriters of the Film and Television industry. Its primary objective is to promote and secure the interests of its member Screenwriters, including settlement of their disputes with the producers, directors, Television channels, Film studios etc. SWA has a strong Dispute Settlement Committee (DSC), which has been functional for more than a decade now. The objectives of the DSC inter alia are : to ensure fair and just hearings of its member writers’ rights and privileges, ensuring that the intellectual property rights of its members are not infringed or violated, ensure that fair and justified remuneration is paid to its members for their screenplays, lyrics and other such written materials.

Responsibilities

The primary responsibility of the selected candidate would be to assist SWA in resolution of its members’ copyright related disputes. This would entail, among others, sifting through the complaints that SWA receives, identifying the valid ones and preparing briefs for the DSC, explaining to the complainants if and why their complaints are not valid, assisting and advising SWA members in issues of drafting legal notices, contracts etc., ensuring proper conduct and coordination of various DSC and Legal Sub-Committee meetings including taking proper minutes, drafting DSC decisions, sending replies to legal notices received by SWA, liaising with SWA panel lawyers and legal advisors, attending court hearings, if needed, on behalf of the SWA.

Qualifications and Experience

The candidate must hold either a five year or a three year full-time graduate (LL.B.) or post-graduate (LL.M.) degree in law from an Institution / College / University / Deemed University recognized by the Bar Council of India. Further, it is essential that the candidate possesses good knowledge of law, relevant statutes pertaining to intellectual property rights, contracts, commercial and labour laws and have an experience of at least 3 (three) years in handling intellectual property rights matters, especially those pertaining to the Copyright Act.

Compensation

The salary, shall be Rupees 70,000 /- (Seventy Thousand Only) per month (negotiable, in case of candidates with exceptional merit, communication skills, experience and knowledge of law).
