TWN- IUCIPRS Workshop on Patent Opposition in Pharmaceutical Field (Apply by 31 March)

Inter-University Centre for IPR Studies (IUCIPRS), CUSAT, and Third World Network are collaboratively organising the seventh edition of the workshop titled ‘Patent Opposition in the Pharmaceutical Field.’ Scheduled to take place from 28 May- 1 June, 2026, the in-person event will be hosted at the Inter-University Centre for IPR Studies (IUCIPRS), CUSAT, Kochi.

In the pharmaceutical realm, the granting of patents is closely tied to access to medicines, enabling patent holders to impose exorbitant prices on their products. Multinational companies often pursue multiple patents for life-saving drugs, extending their monopolies and inflating prices, consequently impeding access to essential medications. Patent Oppositions in the pharmaceutical sector serve as a crucial and effective tool for ensuring access to life-saving, affordable medicines. This system helps filter out frivolous patent applications, helping maintain the quality of patents granted by the Patent Office.

The workshop begins with an introduction to the patent opposition system and its role in improving access to medicines by preventing patents on minor or unjustified modifications to existing drugs. It provides an overview of India’s patentability criteria—including novelty, inventive step, and industrial applicability—along with practical guidance on prior art searches and drafting oppositions. Through interactive sessions, group activities, and exercises, participants will develop the skills needed to review patent applications, identify grounds for opposition, and draft effective patent oppositions. The workshop aims to equip participants with practical tools to challenge unwarranted patent monopolies and support broader access to essential medicines.

The workshop is open only to candidates based in India and to Junior/mid-level Patent and IP Executives working on generic drug launches, Legal teams handling patent challenges, and R&D professionals focusing on formulation and alternative strategies. The workshop is for beginners in the opposition field.  The medium of instruction is English. The workshop is residential. The organisers will cover the expenses for accommodation, travel, and food. There is no registration fee for this workshop.

The last day to apply: March 31, 2026.
