This post is in furtherance of something I have posted earlier. I had already written about the Government of India trying to get GI protection for pashmina. Kashmir Newz reports that apart from objections put forward by the Pakistan based Rawalpindi Chamber of Commerce a Srinagar based artisan body the Kashmir Handmade Pashmina Promotion Trust (KHPPT) has also filed an objection.
The KHPPT objections have reached the Chennai registry unlike those by the Pakistan delegation. “The KHPPT is asking for inclusion of hand spun Pashmina yarn and not just the shawl in the patent, besides exclusion of machine made products.”
The machine intervention enhances production capacity but makes compromises on quality.
Ghulam Muhammad Malla, a Pashmina weaver in Srinagar says that the fine handspun yarn is too delicate for a machine.
The machine intervention enhances production capacity but makes compromises on quality.
This is the second controversy to hit the GOI’s attempts to secure GI protection for certain Indian products. The last being the basmati issue that Kruttika recently reported on.
