SpicyIP Tidbit: IIT Kharagpur’s IP Commercialisation Workshop


Over the last 2 days, an IP protection and commercialisation workshop called IndAc’08 was held at IIT Kharagpur with active support from its Law School, the Rajiv Gandhi School of Intellectual Property Law and the Technology Transfer Group of the institute. This workshop was the first of its kind with industry delegates from various sectors personally interacting with student and faculty inventors discussing the potential for commercialising their work and the results have been very encouraging. In fact, companies like GE, Ranbaxy, Dr.Reddy’s Laboratories, ITC, Tata Group, Mahindra and Mahindra, Hindustan Lever Limited and banks like Standard Chartered have shown a keen interest in following up with these interactions. Also, as part of the workshop, patent clinics were conducted with patent attorneys from Kolkata and Mumbai such as Mr.Anjan Sen, Dr.Indira Banerjee and Dr.Prabuddha Ganguli spending time with every individual inventor discussing the patentability of his/her work and providing the inventors with suggestions on enhancing the value of their technologies. The students also submitted technical write-ups of their projects to the attorneys; the top 100 technologies will receive funding from IIT Kharagpur for patent filing. The event was attended by Prof.Shekhar Chaudhuri, Director of IIM Calcutta, Prof. N.L.Mitra, the Advisor to the IIT Law School, Ajay Kapur, CEO of SIDBI and Kunal Sharma, Co-founder of i-Runway.
