SpicyIP Tidbit: Patent Office upgrades the Indian Patent Information Retrieval System (IPIRS) to provide for ‘application status’

SpicyIP is thrilled to inform its readers that the Indian Patent Office has comprehensively revamped its ‘Indian Patent Information Retrieval System’ (IPIRS) to not only make it more asthetically pleasing to the user but also provide an extremely useful search feature on the ‘application status’ of pending applications.

As our readers may know SpicyIP has always been an ardent advocate of an effective digital patent database since such a database would go a long way in increasing transparency and strengthening the patent system in India.

Coming back to the new ‘application status’ feature – this feature requires the person to key in the application number to check the status of the application. On keying in the number of the application the user is provided with the following details:

(i)Applicant name;
(ii)Date of filing;
(iii)Priority Date;
(iv) Title of Invention;
(v)Publication date under Section 11(A);
(vi)Post-Grant Journal Date under Section 43(2);
(vii)Status of the application.

It was also a pleasure to notice that this search feature is compatible even with new browsers like Chrome since interactive government websites usually work with only Internet Explorer.

I think we should give credit where it is due and congratulate the patent office on its continued efforts to digitize the patent database.

  1. Yes this link is working but the information is not reliable. I checked status of 5 registered patent application. The result shows 3 out of 5 as abandoned. I have made a complaint to CG in Mumbai.

    It is advisible not to rely totally on the the information available through IIRS.

    A very pleasant surprise to see an updated database. Full text of much more patents and published applications available (I have checked till 1994).

    I appreciate the efforts put by SpicyIP for this.

  3. This development is great for increasing transparency in Indian IP as well as for removing misconceptions regarding patents in Indian industry and businesses. However, the system has to improve further, especially with regard to completeness. Many patents are not available in full or in part. One entire patent 186660 is missing and even bibliographic record is not available. Secondly, the HTML patent text is full of OCR errors which must be removed. The Patent Office can take the help of the public such as registered patent agents or other authorized persons who might be able to work online to correct OCR errors.

  4. YES! The Patent office has done a wonderful job. Now the Patent office has to make sure the status is correct & current. I have found some status to be incorrect.

  5. At least we should appreciate that India patent office made this initiative but be cautious about the accuracy, already found few discrepancies in information. Cant rely to give any sort of concrete opinion to clients.

  6. A great Job by Patent Office.
    The claims available are “as granted”. I have checked that. But, the information available is not reliable. In most of the cases the status is “under examination”, even after an year after the final date of the case.

  7. This database is still incomplete. I tried to track patent that was granted couple of years back, which was filed in 1995….failed to retry the information….this has to be updated in totality….what we are getting is recent patent/patent applications that have been granted/published.

  8. Appreciated!

    PS: The tumbnail/pic used in this post hugely discounts the attention of the title…just a thought, and wonder why we choose the lady for the post.

  9. In deed it’s a great job done by Indian Patent Office. Although there are errors in the status, OCR errors and even in some cases, as filed claims are shown as grated claims, however, I am sure that Patent Office will get it rectified in due course. So lets wait and watch for the Final Product.
