SpicyIP Tidbits:GIs to Bhadohi Carpets and Paithani Sarees

It seems to be raining GIs for India. After the Hyderabadi Haleem, it is Bhadohi Carpets and Paithani Sarees to be conferred with the GI status.

BHADOHI CARPETS:

Bhadohi carpets are inspired by classical Indian and Persian motifs and often consists of very intricately knotted designs which have made them a very sought after piece for home decor. The GI status is therefore the much needed respite against the potential infrigements.

UNCTAD India project  supported the artisans, weavers, producers and exporters in Bhadohi- Mirzapur region in their endeavour to seek the legal protection through GI registration.

Abhijit Das, Programme Officer in Charge, UNCTAD India noted:

“GI tag combined with brand building and appropriate marketing initiatives can improve incomes of the artisans, weavers, and others involved in the production-trade chain.Increase in visibility may lead to increase in both demand and price of Bhadohi carpets”

PAITHANI SAREES:

World famous as a poem woven in gold and silk, Paithani sarees have been subjected to infringment by both domestic producers and the international market. The GI status thus will surely contribute towards the growth and protection of the exquisite craftsmanship.

The application seeking GI registration of these products was filed by Deptt. Of Handlooms and textiles, Govt. of Maharashtra along with Sri Rajaswa Bahu Udesiya Sanstha,Yeola and seven other producers/trade associations in December, 2008. Support was extended to the applicants by the Textiles Committee, a Government of India Organisation besides financial support from the UNCTAD-DFID and Ministry of Commerce & Industry, Government of India project “Strategies and Preparedness for Trade and Globalisation in Textiles & Clothing Sector of India”.
