“IP Expressions”: New Technical Magazine Released by India’s IP Office

IP india The Office of the Controller General of Patents, Designs and Trademarks (CGPDTM) released in September a technical magazine titled ‘IP Expressions’. The first volume comes with a message by the Joint Secretary Mr. D.V. Prasad, that the magazine has twin objectives- to enhance awareness of IPRs and inculcate a culture of innovation.

The first volume of the magazine has articles on topics ranging from the history of the Indian patent system, IP cooperation under SAARC, Patents and the Pharmaceutical Industry, Geographical Indications, etc. The magazine is slated to be a biannual publication.

The Preface to the magazine mentions that the magazine has been released with a view to provide a platform for various stakeholders to express their views. In this regard, it was disappointing to see that all the articles in the present volume are authored by either present or former officers at the CGPDTM. While it is interesting to read these officers’ views, one hopes that future issues will feature a greater variety of opinions. Regardless, it is great to see a government office encouraging the sharing of ideas on an official platform through a magazine directed at the public. As this is well beyond the mandate of the Office, its pro-activeness in taking this initiative is truly commendable.

The magazine is free for viewing and download, and can be accessed here.
